  • Build community organization structure to include property owners association, residents association, and a board or group that focuses on development. Establish committees for Building & Development, Transportation, Parks & Greening, and Communication, Marketing & Fundraising.
  • Request changing one-way streets to two-way.
  • Work with City on a Wheland Site Master Plan for redevelopment.
  • Begin tree plantings for neighborhood -at 26th & Williams Street, and at the Town Center. Establish the Share-the-Care Program to promote private sector involvement.
  • Work with Public Art Committee to coordiante locations and future public art installations.

  • Focus on housing redevelopment strategy that clusters new housing and mixed-use development for Southside Gardens area. Begin improvements to Pringle Park.

  • Issue a Request for Proposals for Southern Gateway - development on old motel site.

  • The area just north of 37th Street at the base of Lookout Mountain is referred to as the Southern Gateway. The historic railroad overpasses, the mountain backdrop, a landmark restaurant, shopping, and connections to nearby neighborhoods give a rich history and character to this southern entry to the South Broad area.

    Businesses within this Southern Gateway must consider interior block shared parking with significant landscaping to create the walkable, pedestrian atmosphere needed to enhance commerce. New residential units, whether apartments or condominiums, across the street on St. Elmo Avenue will also add to the vitality and desirability of this district.

    Southern Gateway Project Recommendations
  • Mixed -use office development and public space at old hotel site
  • Mt. Vernon Restaurant Plaza at new plaza/park
  • Intersection reconfiguration at South Broad Street, St. Elmo Avenue, and Cummings Highway
  • St. Elmo Avenue safewalk/bikeway
  • Medium density housing on St. Elmo Avenue
  • Charger Drive greenspace for festivals
  • The Gateway/public art site
  • With an extensive list of projects and programs to be accomplished over a period of ten to fifteen years, a community must focus and prioritize their efforts. Through a survey and public meetings, the community identified the following top ten priority projects that they felt would bring immediate results or were crucial to begin revitalization:

    1. Underground relocated utilities on South Broad Street
    2. Redevelopment of Wheland Site
    3. Design Guidelines for new construction
    4. New infill commercial/mixed-use development along South Broad
    5. Tree Planting on South Broad Street
    6. Signage and Wayfinding Program
    7. Gateway improvements
    8. Redevelop the old hotel site - Southern Gateway
    9. One-way streets converted to two-way
    10. New housing in Southside Gardens
